Gradski perivoj

The park in Donji Miholjac owes its origins to the Hilleprand von Prandau family and Count Mailath. Although the first design for the park has not survived, historical facts suggest it can be dated to 1818. In that year Josip Ignac's widow, Marija Ana, née Pejačević, had a manor house built for her son Karl Sigismund von Prandau, with a park laid out beside it in the spirit of the time.

Its present appearance was largely shaped by Gustav Prandau, who moved part of his large nursery to Donji Miholjac because of the more favourable, milder climate. He was behind the development of tree and shrub production and the building of greenhouses and propagation beds. The Prandau family nursery was one of the leading ones in the Monarchy, and its plants were exported to almost every country – especially hornbeam, grown in containers for onward transport. Even so, the park's final appearance was given to it by Ladislav Mailath and his wife Ilma Mailath.

At the heart of the garden is a landscape park with elements of Historicism and Art Nouveau woven in, a mark of the owners' taste. The park had heated lawns, was lit and was always open to the public, and its collection of 60 species of rhododendron and 103 species of camellia was especially valuable.

Today the park is protected across its full 16 hectares. Its basic layout has survived, but because it has not been fully looked after, it needs revitalising.
